Who Let the Dog Out?

With Michael Vick’s recent release from serving a 23 month sentence for financing dog fights, there are two questions looming: Will Vick be reinstated into the NFL, and more importantly, What team is willing to sign him?

First, his sentencing was extreme. I understand the influence he has a superstar/role model and the negative impact he had with his actions. Therefore, it was necessary for Vick to pay his debt to society, no doubt, but 2 years? Outrageous! Consider Donte Stallworth who only served 24 days for DUI manslaughter. How about Leonard Little who was also drunk while driving and only served 90 days in prison after running a light crashing into another car and killing a person. My logic will not allow me to understand how nor why Vick was convicted so strictly. I do not intend to play down his actions, but he did not kill a human being. Animals are friends yes, but to be protected more, cared more for than a Human Being? Absurdity.

Pitbulls are known to be naturally aggressive and have caused problems for innocent people for ages. Just ask your neighborhood mail carrier. There have been talks about putting these aggressive animals to sleep as they pose too much of a threat being domesticated. So how bad were Vick’s actions really? Nonetheless, Vick was wrong we will not debate the severity.

The real question at hand is what now? Now that he has accepted his faults, the consequences of his actions and has served his time, why is there any question about him being reinstated? He is meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell as early as July 23rd or 24th, 2009. Current news reveals that reinstatement will be conditional for the free agent so that he is able to attend training camp with whatever team is willing to sign him. Goodell will reserve the right to suspend Vick in addition to his time served.

There is much speculation about what teams are willing to give Vick a second chance. With his speed and quickness coupled with the Wild Cat offense, Vick would be a great asset to any team. Some have been talking about Vick going to Seattle with his former coach and a smaller media market or to Pittsburg because of the recent Roethlisberger allegations. At any rate, none can argue his raw talent, how he has redefined the quarterback position and that he is arguably the best quarterback of all time.

If you ask me, man is flawed. Vick understands that and so should everyone else. He has sacrificed so much already. Goodell should show mercy, leave the power of God to decide mans’ fate in God’s hands and welcome Vick back into the National Football League.

  1. I agree with you totally that Vick should not have been sentenced for such a long period time for a crime against animals. If anything he should have just been sentenced to see a psychiatrist for x amount of sessions.

Vick could end up in Pittsburgh but it wouldn't be because of the recent allegations to Roethlisberger. It seems to most people like this girl is just lying anyway and has some history with these type of stuff and is under some financial distress.

Vick would end up in Pittsburgh because they would see him as a Slash type or Antwan Randle El. As a Steelers fan, I would completely support that decision.

Although I do like dogs, I don't love them more than people. Its sad when you think about if they would have been sending dogs over to fight the war in Iraq, it would have never happened.
