Its a Small World After All

With the increased production of new, cutting edge technologies, the world is getting smaller. Today, one could have a better relationship with someone on the other side of the world than with his or her own next door neighbor.

I was told that America's borders are one way mirrors; we look out and see ourselves reflected as others peer through and see us too. The expectation of the world's culture to reflect everything America stands for is selfish and very unrealistic. Its nothing short of egocentrism at its finest.

Let's consider the job market. Before the American economy began to suffer, people were coming here from all parts of the world in order to work. Now that jobs are being outsourced, Americans are not only competing with Americans for positions, we are competing with The WORLD. However, we still have the expectation that we should not have to go to other countries to look for jobs even though other countries have been doing just that for some time.

With that being said I think it is essential that we as a people develop a healthy world view. In order to do so, one must be dedicated to learning and reading about World News, not just locally or nationally. Secondly, if you are a student, take advantage of the Study Abroad opportunities available at your place of study. For OSU Students, visit The Office of International Affairs [oia.osu.edu].

I do believe that obtaining a healthier World View will make us all appreciate each other more. It would also create a stronger connection to each other, convicting people to address crises such as the tragic happenings in Haiti, not just our hometown. Ultimately, adopting a healthier World View would produce healthier relationships between countries.
